City life’s a drag

Posted by admin / Return to news

Move over Priscilla, Aotearoa has its very own drag queens on wheels, stacked up in heels!

Sequins and poi will be swinging across New Zealand as Hikoi on Heels hits the streets of Whangarei,Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch.

Each city will host a drag queen extravaganza, with handbags full of frivolous fun and glitzy glamour. Flocks of beauties bearing feather boas will be don their heels to raise money for the 2010 Hui Takatāpui at a night of entertainment featuring drag shows, prizes and staggering stilettos.

Miss Ribena from K’Road’s Family Bar will be bussing to each venue accompanied by a coterie of drag queens. Miss Ribena will MC each evening, which will see local drag queens coming out to play in high wigs, high heels and lashings of sparkles.

The 2010 Hui Takatāpui will focus on the health and well‐being of Māori and rangatahi (youth). The hui aims to increase Māori support for HIV prevention, as well as provide leadership and advice on issues for takatāpui. It also provides an opportunity for takatāpui to network, have fun, play sport, and be entertained in a safe and supportive social environment.

Hikoi on Heels kicks off in Whangarei’s Danger Danger on 24 July, and then capers down to:
• Auckland’s Family Bar on 31 July
• Hamilton’s Shine Bar on the 7 August
• Christchurch’s Cruz Bar on 14 August
• Wellington’s Club Ivy on 21 August

Jordon Harris, NZAF Programme Manager Community Engagement, says “the hikoi is a fun way of generating some funds for the hui. It’s only $5 or koha and every cent will go towards ensuring this year’s hui supports as many takatāpui and rangatahi as possible. The hikoi will be a good night out and I’d like to thank Miss Ribena for her support.”

Registrations for the 2010 Hui Takatāpui opened on 1 July 2010. Information packs and Hikoi on Heels details are available at www.nzaf.org.nz/huitakatapui.
