Hui Takatāpui is an annual national event that celebrates and strengthens the sexual and gender diversity of Māori, especially rangatahi. Hui Takatāpui 2010 will focus on the health and well-being of Māori and aims to increase Māori support for HIV prevention as well as providing leadership and advice on issues for takatāpui. Hui Takatāpui 2010 will also provide opportunities for Māori to network, have fun, play sport and be entertained in a safe and supportive social environment.
The theme for Hui Takatāpui 2010 is ‘He Puarere Mai Tawhiti’ which means ‘seeds carried by wind from distant lands’. The kaupapa behind this concept is that, as Māori, we are connected with our environment and the natural world. We share knowledge and experience with our friends, whānau, hapū and iwi. We are like puarere - we migrate to new places, make new whānau, new homes and new lives. We take some of the old and make it new.
In 2010, the National Takatāpui Awards will be presented at Te Marae at Te Papa on Saturday 30 October. This black tie event recognises outstanding achievement in the takatāpui community.
