Peter has been involved in HIV behavioural research, epidemiology, public policy and prevention in New Zealand since 1996.
He is currently senior researcher at the New Zealand AIDS Foundation Research Unit and is lead investigator on the biannual GAPSS and GOSS HIV behavioural surveillance surveys among men who have sex with men. He works closely with the AIDS Epidemiology Group, University of Otago in Dunedin and has contributed to collaborative projects such as HIV Futures NZ with the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society, La Trobe University, Melbourne.
Peter recently gained a PhD in public health from the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine at the University of Otago, his thesis being awarded “exceptional” status. He has a commitment to early dissemination of research findings and in 2008 won an award for best paper at the New Zealand Sexual Health Society Conference. He has been a reviewer for the International AIDS Conferences, and the international journals Sexual Health and Sexually Transmitted Infections.
Prior to working in HIV he studied political philosophy, public policy and economics (BSocSci hons) and completed an MPhil (hons) in the sociology of social movements.
