A cadre of organisations is raising the alarm about an increase in gonorrhoea among Auckland’s gay and bisexual men....
Born in London and raised in Wellington from the age of 3, Carl has a wide and varied career. He did an apprenticeship as a dairy farmer in Taranaki when he left school, and worked at the Wakefield Sauna in Wellington for two years before moving overseas to live in London.
There, he managed a sandwich bar and several restaurants and also worked for the Socialist Workers Party. Upon moving to Melbourne, Australia, Carl worked for the Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital.
During his time in Melbourne, he was on the board of directors for PLWHA (People Living with HIV and AIDS) Victoria. He represented the organisation at NAPWA conferences, was part of a steering committee that developed resources on work discrimination and medication side effects, and organised bush walks for HIV positive men.
Having been part of the Wellington scene for many years, he’s proud to be back home again as part of the gay men’s community. As Community Engagement Co-ordinator for the Wellington region, Carl would like to be seen by the community as a first port of call for safe sex advice and avoiding HIV infection.
Carl has been HIV positive for over twenty years, and says he hopes his work with NZAF will allow him to put something back into the community and allow his experiences to be used for the benefit of others.
