The NZAF Library and Information Service is responsible for gathering together a comprehensive range of relevant publications on the HIV and AIDS epidemic from both New Zealand and overseas and organising them into a specialised and accessible library collection.
The Library and Information Service started in 1983 with a couple of manila folders containing biomedical information about HIV and AIDS. 26 years later, the NZAF library has grown into the largest specialised collection on the epidemic in the Southern Hemisphere, with more than 3,640 resources. These include books, reports, conference abstracts, journals, periodicals, electronic media, video tapes, and posters.
It’s a comprehensive source of scientific information about the epidemic, as well as a social and historical record of issues affecting the groups most at-risk of contracting HIV within New Zealand, in particular gay and bisexual men.
Some of the other subjects covered by the collection:
HIV and AIDS
Clinical/symptoms
Complementary therapies
Counselling and support
Discrimination and human rights
Health care workers
Homosexuality, bisexuality, sexual orientation
Legal and ethics
Policy – local and international
Prevention education
Health promotion
Research – local and international
Sexually transmitted infections
Treatments and vaccines
Virology and immunology
Women
Workplace
Youth
The Library’s resources are of interest and benefit to many groups, including doctors, educators and teachers, health care workers, health promotion staff, people living with HIV and AIDS, university and polytechnic students and staff, researchers, journalists, social workers, therapists and counsellors.
Accessing the Library is free, and non-reference materials can be loaned for a period of two weeks (renewable on request). The hours are 10-4pm, Monday to Friday by appointment.
